New IRCC updates and strategies to attract global tech talent in 2023

Canada is increasing its efforts to attract global tech talent. As the New IRCC updates and strategies to attract global tech talent in 2023. Honourable Immigration Minister Sean Fraser recently announced the rolling out of new strategies and updates to help Canada attract skilled workers. And fast-track the growth of its technology sector. The following are the highlights of the new IRCC updates and strategies:

New IRCC updates – Tech Talent Strategy in 2023

  • New addition – Innovation Stream under the International Mobility Program (IMP)
  • Remote work for Digital Nomads
  • Open Work Permit for H1-B visa holders
  • Upgrading current programs such as Global Skills Strategy and the Startup Visa program.

Launching Innovation Stream under the IMP

IRCC is looking forward to adding a new stream to IMP to select applicants with very high-tech skills. However, to do the same, IRCC will be selecting applicants from key tech occupations where the labour market need is higher. As a result, help in not only developing but expanding the Canadian tech sector.

Moreover, we should be expecting the new IMP Innovation Stream to launch by the end of the day. Also, employers to get tech-skilled workers will not require an LMIA to fill their job positions via this stream. As a result, both Canadian employers and skilled workers can help grow the Canadian technological sector.

As per the new update, IRCC may choose to for:

  • Either a work permit of 5 years for foreigners who will work for a company that the Canadian government identifies, OR
  • Open work permit of 5 years for applicants with high-tech skills, who will work in select in-demand occupations.

Remote Work for Digital Nomdas

New IRCC updates and strategies to attract global tech talent in 2023. As per this Canada is willing to collaborate with private and public partners to attract digital nomads. Also, it will be assessing if doing so will benefit Canada or not. Besides, as of now, a digital nomad can enter Canada for 6 months on a Canada Visitor Visa (Single-Entry). However, to do so they must be working remotely for a foreign worker.

However, Canada wants holders of such visa types to stay in Canada and work with Canadian employers. Because this will help Canada turn into a hotspot for digital nomads. But who is a digital nomad? A digital nomad is a skilled worker who can work remotely with any employer in the world. And the country wants such workers to move and work in Canada. Either by applying for a TRV or a Canada PR visa.

Open Work Permit for H1-B Visa holders

As per the new update, US H1-B visa holders can:

  • Move to Canada from the US with their family members.
  • Applicants will get an open work permit for 3 years
    • They will be able to work with any employer in Canada.
  • Main applicants’ spouse and dependents can also get a study or work permit.

Besides, this measure is applicable for 1 year. Until Canada gets 10,000 applicants under the same strategy. Moreover, this new update will now attract US H1-B visa holders to move to Canada and flourish with ease.

Updating current Canada Immigration Programs

As per the new IRCC updates and strategies to attract global tech talent in 2023, IRCC is updating the following Canada immigration programs such as:

Global Skills Strategy

The GSS is a program that helps Canadian employers get quick and easy access to highly skilled tech workers. As per this program, a Canadian employer can get LMIA approval in 2 weeks. Whereas the foreign tech workers’ work permit application is getting approval in 2-weeks as well.

Canada Business Immigration – Start-Up Visa Program

The SUV program helps foreign entrepreneurs to begin their startup business in Canada. However, they can apply for the SUV if they get support from a Canada-designated venture capital fund, angel investor, business organisation and or an organisation.

As per current updates, the applicant to the Start-Up Visa program can get a 1-year work permit. However, the new updates are increasing this length to 3 years and applicants will get an open work permit. So, an applicant can increase their prospects of working in Canada. Because a 1-year temporary work permit allows them to only work on their startup. Whereas an open work permit will allow them to work for anyone.

In addition, in 2023, we can see a higher number of slots for offering PR visas under the Federal Business Category on the Immigration Levels Target 2023.
