Breaking News: IRCC updates, IELTS 6 bands requirement removed for Canada Student Direct Stream. From Aug 10, 2023, international students will no longer have to get a minimum of 6 bands each in IELTS four modules – Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.
As per IRCC, Canada, the following move will help students to avail of top-quality education in Canada. And further enhances their career prospects post getting a Canada Study Visa. However, the following applied to the Student Direct Stream (SDS).
Earlier candidates were required to get 6 bands each in IELTS Academic. But with the new provision candidates will have to get overall 6.0 bands. What is IELTS and why does Canada want students to undergo this test?
Canada has two official languages English and French. Thus, it requires all permanent and temporary resident visa holders to be proficient in at least one of the languages. As a result, as a student, you must showcase your language skill level to get approval for a Canada study visa.
- Permanent resident (PR Visa) – Must have a minimum language skill level of CLB 7 – 6 bands each.

How to apply to the Canada Student Direct Stream (SDS)?
To get a fast-track Canada Study Visa under the SDS you must do the following:
- Firstly, be a resident of 1 of the 14 eligible countries.
- Secondly, get a Letter of Acceptance from a Canadian Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
- Also, pay 1-year tuition fee for the college/university you are taking admission into.
- Get a Guaranteed Income Certificate (GIC) of CAD 10,000.
- If applying for Quebec get a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ).
- As applicable submit medical and police clearance reports.
- Besides, have educational transcripts ready for submission.
- Moreover, submit a language test result. You can submit the following:
- IELTS – Now overall 6.0.
- CELPIP – CLB 7 (7 bands each)
- TOEFT iBt – 83
- PTE – 60
- CAEL – 60
