Different ways to make a successful move to Canada from India in 2022
Each year tens and thousands of Indians fly to Canada in the hope to call Canada its home. No matter the reason, over the years Canada has been home to more than 32 million NRIs and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO). If you too wish to be a part of the 8th largest Indian diaspora then you have different ways to make a successful move to Canada from India.
Canada offers multiple immigration pathways to foreign nationals. You can choose to move to Canada for studying, work, and or permanent settlement. The following are the different ways to make a successful move to Canada from India:
- Express Entry (EE) System
- Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
- Work while studying
- Canada Work Permit
- Family Class Sponsorship
- Parents and Grandparents (PGP) Sponsorship Program
Express Entry (EE) System
The EE System is Canada’s most famous immigration pathway. It is an online system that handles application intake from 3 of its sub-streams such as:
- Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
- Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
So, you have an option to apply to 1 of these streams if you meet the eligibility terms. Also, the EE system evaluates profiles in the EE pool and give a CRS rank under its Comprehensive Ranking System. Post that the applicants who have a high CRS rank are invited in periodic EE draws.
Once you get an Invitation to Apply (ITA) you will have 60 days to submit a Canada permanent resident application. After that IRCC will process your application to see if you meet the Canada PR terms. If approved, you will get a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR).
Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
The Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) is a pathway where Canada’s provinces and territories have an option to nominate foreign nationals. By doing so they can meet their labour market shortage and add to the economic growth of the province. However, Quebec and Nunavut do not take part in the PNP.
As per Canada Immigration, there are two ways to apply to PNP. You can either apply to an express entry linked sub-stream of a province or can apply to other independent sub-streams of the province. So, you will have to meet the eligibility terms. After applying, the provinces hold periodic draws where they will select you for nomination. Once you get an ITA for the same you can apply for nomination. And can later apply to IRCC for a Canada PR visa.
Besides, if you apply to 1 of the sub-streams of a province that is linked to the EE system, you will get an extra 600 CRS score after getting a nomination from the province. This will increase your chances of getting invited to IRCC’s periodic EE draws for Canada PR.
Work while Studying
Canada over the past years has seen a rise in the intake of international students from India. It is also seen that Canada’s retention rate for Indian students applying for permanent residence is high. To study in Canada, you must have a study permit. A study permit allows you to study in Canada for the duration of your study program. It also allows you to work 20 hours per week while studying either on-campus or off-campus. In addition, during scheduled academic breaks you are allowed to work full-time.
As Indians, you can also apply to the Student Direct Stream for faster processing of your Canada Study Visa application.
International students also have the option of getting a Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP). The PGWP allows permit holders to work under any employer in Canada. Also, the duration of the PGWP depends on the duration of the study program of the holder. So, for 1 year of the study program, you can qualify to get validity of 1 year on the PGWP visa.
Canada Work Permit
A work permit is an official document that allows the visa holder to work temporarily in Canada. The work permit has 2 categories such as Open Work Permit and Closed Work Permit.
Under the Canada Work Permit category, an employer will need a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). An LMIA is a requirement where the Canadian employer will have to prove that the foreign skilled worker, they are hiring will not negatively impact the Canadian labour market.
An Open Work Permit for Canada allows the permit holder to work with any employer in Canada. Whereas on a Closed Work Permit you can only work for one employer who is listed on the visa.
